Blood Bytes: Practical Pediatric Hemato-Oncology for Pediatricians

Highlights
Hematological abnormalities and early manifestations of childhood cancers often present first to general pediatricians in outpatient clinics or emergency settings. Symptoms such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, persistent fever, bone pain, lymphadenopathy, abdominal masses, or unexplained cytopenias may initially be subtle and mimic common pediatric illnesses. Early recognition of these warning signs is critical, as timely diagnosis and referral significantly improve outcomes in pediatric hematological disorders and childhood cancers. In routine practice, pediatricians frequently face challenges in interpreting complete blood count abnormalities, recognizing key peripheral smear findings, and distinguishing benign cytopenias from serious underlying conditions. Identifying early features of leukemia and solid tumors, and knowing when urgent referral is warranted, are equally essential skills. This workshop is designed to address these gaps through case-based, clinically oriented learning, with a focus on practical interpretation, red flag recognition, and decision-making relevant to everyday pediatric practice.
